The 31-year-old kitesurfer was killed in the impact, while three others were slightly injured in the incident. Another person was reported missing at sea but was later found

A sudden gust of wind from a “mini tornado” lifted a kitesurfer off the ground and slammed him into a restaurant window, killing him instantly.

The incident happened in Villers-sur-Mer on the Normandy coast of France on Saturday evening.

In addition to the death of the 31-year-old kitesurfer, five others were hospitalized and three others also suffered minor injuries.

One person was also reported to have been lost at sea but was later recovered.

According to the Daily Mail, meteorologists were not predicting winds strong enough to form what the French media dubbed a “mini tornado”.

Footage captured last night shows high winds collecting clouds of sand while chairs and tables are blown about.

It also showed beach attendants folding towels and umbrellas.

Thierry Granturco, the mayor of Villers-sur-Mer, called the winds “a violence such as we have never seen on our coast”.

On the Côte Fleurie (flower coast) between Ouistreham and Deauville, the wind lasted 20 to 25 minutes.

This unexpected weather phenomenon is not announced by Météo-France, the organization that monitors weather events.

Speaking to Franceinfo, he said: “The wind got stronger and ended in a mini tornado.

“We had a communication with Météo France who had informed us that they could not foresee this type of mini tornado.

“We knew we were going to have strong winds, they were announced at the very end of the evening or even during the night, but we didn’t think they would be of this force.”

Earlier this year, a huge tornado swept through parts of Germany, leaving 50 injured in vicious winds that tore roofs off houses and destroyed cars, according to local reports.

A 37-year-old woman was reportedly flown to hospital after being seriously injured in the storm.

In March, while a massive “multi-vortex” tornado in the US killed one person and devastated homes across an entire city, residents were told to urgently seek shelter.

Shocking footage showed a large black tornado cloud appearing across the night sky as officials warned residents that “complete destruction” was “possible” in the area.
