10 dead in Monterey Park mass shooting, police say

MONTEREY PARK, California– Ten people were killed and ten injured in a mass shooting at a New Year’s celebration in Monterey Park, police said.

The Los Angeles suburb is hosting the Monterey Park Lunar New Year Festival this weekend, marking the start of the Chinese lunar calendar, ABC News reported.

The annual two-day street festival is well attended, with previous celebrations drawing up to 100,000 visitors daily, according to the city. Saturday’s events were scheduled to end at 9 p.m

The sheriff’s department said the shooting began just after 10 p.m. on West Garvey Avenue near the downtown blocks where the festival was taking place.

It is unclear whether the shooter or shooters are in custody.
