Patients in the poorest parts of England are twice as likely to attend A&E as patients in the richest parts, new NHS data shows.

Statistics on emergency department wait times in 2021-22 showed that 976,284 patients waited more than 12 hours after their arrival last year – a triple increase compared to 2020-21 when 302,784 were registered.

NHS Digital, which published the report, said it did not include 15,900 reports from patients who waited longer than 72 hours in 2021-22 because “it is considered unlikely that a patient would wait longer than 72 hours in the emergency room is”.
