The government must release an imminent support package to help struggling households cope with rising energy bills, Martin Lewis has urged.
With the energy price cap rising to £3,500 or more, the Money Saving Expert founder said the “zombie government” should not wait until the end of the Tory leadership contest to decide on household aid.
He dismissed the extra help Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss promised during their bid for the leadership as “trivial” amid bills that are expected to be £2,300 a year higher than last October.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said.
It comes as oil major Shell reported record profits of $11.5 billion, doubling its earnings in a single year, while British gas owner Centrica quintupled an operating profit that rose to £1.34 billion as energy bills plummeted skyrocketed.
Earnings for both companies were significant gains from the same period last year, sparking fury from commentators amid a deepening inflation and livelihood crisis.
