Julio Lugo died of a heart attack the day before his 46th birthday

Former MLB shortstop Julio Lugo, who worked at Boston Red Sox, St Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros, tragically died at the age of 45. Lugo passed away on Monday, November 15, 2021, just one day before his 46th birthday. A heart attack is suspected to be the cause of death. He leaves behind his wife Surki Lugo and his four children.

Lugo began his career with the Astros in 1994 when he was drafted from Connors State College in Oklahoma. Before joining the Red Sox in 2007, he also held brief stints with the Rays and Dodgers. Born in Brooklyn, he played with the three teams for 12 seasons in the MLB and even won the World Series with the Red Sox in 2007. That year he had a brilliant record of .237 with 73 RBI and 135 hits. Later in 2009, Lugo was sold to the St. Louis Cardinals. His combined hit in 88 games that year with two teams was .280. After joining the Atlanta Braves in 2011, Lugo became a free agent and played for the Cleveland Indians and Peoria Explorers. He officially retired in 2011, but continued to play in leagues other than MLB.

Who is Julio Lugo’s wife?

News of Julio Lugo’s untimely death was confirmed by his family to ESPN reporter Enrique Rojas. “Julio Lugo’s family told me about the death of the former MLB player, presumably due to a heart attack. Lugo was 45 years old. #RIP,” tweeted Rojas.

Lugo was married to Surki Lugo, who happened to be his second wife. The couple preferred to keep their family life private and the exact schedule of their relationship is not precisely known. The two reportedly tied the knot at Primada Cathedral of America in the Dominican Republic in 2007. The two were parents of four children, three sons and one daughter.

Lugo was previously married to Mabel Lugo, who accused him of domestic violence in 2003. The MLB player reportedly attacked his wife after his team the Houston Astros suffered an 11-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves. He was charged with assault, which included a one-year prison term and a $ 4,000 fine. However, Mabel Lugo later defended Julio, saying that he did not intentionally harm her. Mabel Lugo’s current whereabouts are unknown and she has not released a statement regarding his death.
