Who is Darren Apolonio?

Darren Apolonio is a designer from New York. At the age of 27, he is said to be the youngest candidate for “Project Runway”. Apolonio was born and raised in the Philippines by a single mother along with his three sisters. In high school he loved and was obsessed with artists like David Bowie and Lady Gaga, who with their fearless approach to fashion served as role models and inspiration that eventually led him into the world of design. Darren did his BFA in Fashion at SCAD and prides himself on capturing emotions and translating them into a piece of clothing. After graduating, Darren moved to New York, where he did internships with several designers and stylists. In addition, he created his eponymous line that bears his trademark – over-the-top designs for everyone, regardless of gender.

The global Covid-19 pandemic that began in China resulted in many forms of hatred towards Asian communities across the country. As a proud Asian man, Darren has been cautious as several racist incidents related to the pandemic have occurred over the past year. Over time, he decided not to fear his identity and continue to celebrate his Asian heritage – mixed in with his crazy personality and eclectic design aesthetic to be part of a new generation of designers on a mission to be who you are without excuses , and reaching for the stars without regret or hesitation.

Season 19 of Project Runway premieres Thursday, October 14th at 9 p.m. ET / PT. After the show premieres, you can watch new episodes on Bravo every Thursday at 9:00 p.m. ET / PT.
