Who is Coral Castillo?
Coral Castillo is a 40 year old designer from Los Angeles. Castillo is originally from Mexico City and later from Tijuana. Coral was familiar with clothing as a design from a young age, being the daughter of a seamstress and growing up with fine fabrics and bespoke clothing. While living in Tijuana, her mother designed bespoke clothing for a select clientele. In 2001, Castillo moved to the United States with her mother and siblings. Inspired by her mother’s art, she attended the Art Institute of California in San Francisco to study fashion design. As a young single mother, Coral persevered and followed her passions by balancing work while attending design school. She will appear as one of 16 talented designers on Season 19 of Project Runway.
Castillo started her self-titled Coral Castillo line, where she focuses on texture, layers, dramatic shapes, and a playful relationship with light and opacity. In 2013 she was named one of Orange County’s best designers. She later also won the notable Moss Adams Fashion Innovator Award in 2019. Best known for her artistry, Castillo was featured in Vogue Italia, British Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily (WWD). During the pandemic, she set about expanding her library of skills, including macrame, which she quickly incorporated into her designs. Her goal is to show her son that hard work and perseverance are the keys to success. Coral finds inspiration in feminine empowerment, expressing resilience and maintaining a fighting spirit without ever losing sight of the feminine.
