Who is Andres Matonte? Uruguayan referee takes command at World Cup 2022

With the Qatar World Cup fast approaching, we’ve had a sneak peek at the referees who have been chosen for this year’s tournament.

Andres Matonte is one of nine South American referees taking part in Qatar.

Who is Andres Matonte?

Andres Matonte was born in 1988.

He made his debut as a referee at the Uruguayan championship when he was just 20 years old.

Who are the confirmed referees for the 2022 World Cup?

He has been an official FIFA referee since 2019 and has refereed a number of important matches.

His participation in the 2021 Arab Cup and South American World Cup qualifiers have earned him a spot at this year’s tournament.

More recently, the 34-year-old took over Liverpool, no not that one, and Luis Suarez, yes that one, scored twice against them.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona star has returned to Uruguay’s Primera Division, scoring twice for Club Nacional against Uruguayan side Liverpool FC.
