James Franco has faced the wrath of the internet ever since movie lovers learned that the Oscar nominee and two-time Golden Globe winner will soon be starring as the late Cuban revolutionary president, Fidel Castro. James Franco will portray the late Cuban leader in a film titled Alina of Cuba.
In Miguel Bardem’s directorial effort, Ma Maestro will also play the role of Natalia “Naty” Revuelta – the Cuban-born socialite with whom he had a passionate love affair. The newly announced project is reported to be based on Castro’s illegitimate daughter, Alina Fernandez, played by Ana Villafane. The film’s casting has sparked an outrage when socialites including John Leguizamo, Ana Navarro and Jeff Torres slammed the actor by saying “he’s not Latino”.

James Franco could face backlash online, but a social media post from a Twitter user pointed to an uncanny resemblance between Franco and Castro. The Post claimed that the 44-year-old actor’s grandfather was born in Madeira, while Fidel Castro’s mother was from the Canary Islands, putting them just 100 miles apart.
“Interesting tidbit, James Franco’s grandpa was born in Madeira while Fidel Castro’s mother was from the Canary Islands,” one person said. The post continued, “Both of their genetic histories are literally less than 100 miles apart. In other words, this argument is stupid.”

Fidel Castro was the son of Angel Maria Baptist Castro and Argiz and Lina Ruz Gonzalez. His father was born in Lancara, Lugo Province, Spain while his mother was born in Catalina, Pinar del Rio, Cuba.
Castro’s paternal grandfather was Manuel de Castro and Nunez Lancara, Lugo, Galicia. Castro’s paternal grandmother, Antonia Argiz y Fernández, was from Lancara, Lugo, Galicia.
