Mark Ballas is a “Dancing With the Stars” fan favorite, professional dancer who hasn’t been on the show for half a decade. Now the star has returned to the ballroom.

Ballas first joined Dancing With the Stars in the show’s fifth season and was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Choreography in 2011, and it came as a surprise to fans that he would be returning after a five-year absence.

For season 31, Ballas has partnered with TikTok superstar Charli D’Amelio.

Ballas and D’Amelio danced to “Savage” and performed a cha cha. The dance propelled her to the top of the leaderboard, earning 8 seconds from each of the judges. The two had a lot of energy in their dance and the fans were thrilled to see Ballas’ choreography once again in the ballroom.

When asked how it felt to be in the ballroom, D’Amelio only had kind words.

“It feels incredible, I saw that show before I could even form memories, let’s be honest it was a big part of my life so just being able to dance again… is incredible,” D’Amelio said after her Dance.

She also said she was proud of her mother, Heidi D’Amelio. And as a fun fact, Alfonso shared that D’Amelio was just 4 years old when Ballas won his first mirrorball in 2008.

Conrad Green was originally an executive producer on Dancing With the Stars and returned prior to season 31.

Ballas said he was there when Green called him to return.

“I got a call from Conrad Green,” he said in an interview with Us Weekly. “I was working with Conrad back then, when I came to him, back then, and he said, ‘Would you be willing to do it?’ and I was like, ‘It sounds like fun,’ and that’s why I’m here.”

From Green’s point of view, he really wanted someone to come back and challenge D’Amelio.

in a (n Interviewed by Entertainment Weekly Ahead of the season premiere, Green revealed that he wanted Ballas to come back because he wanted his creativity in the ballroom, but he also wanted someone to really challenge TikTok superstar Charli D’Amelio.

“Charli has a lot of potential,” Green shared. “She has a lot of dance background. So we wanted to make sure that everyone who’s worked with her is really driving and imaginative, and I can’t think of a dancer who’s more imaginative than Mark. I reached out and said, ‘Are you interested?’ and he thought about it and said, ‘Yeah, let’s try.’ He loves the show.”

He added, “He obviously has his music and acting and all the other things that he’s done. But he just thought, ‘Why not? Let’s try it.” I can already see the competition in his eyes. You can get the boy out of the ballroom, but you can’t get the ballroom out of the boy.”

Dancing With the Stars airs Mondays at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT on Disney+ on Monday nights.
