A “voice” coach faces litigation after rejecting a settlement offer in a tax fraud case. Read on to find out why Latina singing sensation Shakira faces up to eight years in prison in Spain.

According to Reuters, Shakira on Wednesday, July 27, turned down an offer of a settlement from prosecutors in her tax fraud case, meaning she could face a trial. The Colombian singer is accused of not paying 14.5 million euros in income taxes between 2012 and 2014.

In a previous article on the judge’s denial of Shakira’s appeal, Reuters reported that prosecutors say she lived in Spain during those years and is therefore liable for the country’s income tax, while Shakira’s representatives say she only moved to Spain in 2015 and has done so since paying her taxes. She also said in the court documents obtained by Reuters that she initially paid €17.2 million in taxes and therefore her tax debt is fully settled.

“Shakira’s conduct on tax issues has always been impeccable in all countries where she has had to pay taxes, and she trusted and faithfully followed the recommendations of the best specialists and advisors,” the singer said in a statement in May 2022.

Reuters later reported that Spanish prosecutors were seeking an eight-year prison sentence and a $23 million fine for the former Voice coach in the case. Prosecutors claim she bought a house in Barcelona in 2012 and started living there with her family – her then-partner Gerard Pique, from whom she is now separated, and their two sons Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7, once born. Milan was born in Barcelona, Spain in January 2013.

In a new statement, after rejecting the settlement offer, the terms of which were not disclosed to the public, the singer said she was “completely convinced of her innocence” and viewed this case as a “complete violation of her rights.” ”

“The singer is fully convinced of her innocence and therefore does not accept any comparison,” the statement reads.

A hearing date has not yet been set.

The Grammy-winner coached “The Voice” for seasons four and six. In season four, she tied for fourth place with teammate Sasha Allen, and in season six her final teammate, Kristen Merlin, was also eliminated in the semifinals, taking fourth place.

In April 2022, she released a new song called “Te Felicito” with artist Rauw Alejandro; She celebrated it hit 200 million streams on Spotify in a July 27, 2022 Instagram post.

And she’s currently appearing as the creator and executive producer of NBC’s new dance competition, Dancing With Myself.

“I’m delighted to be part of a dance competition that places so much emphasis on creative movement and translating it into personal expression, not to mention how it contributes to the sense of community,” Shakira said in a statement announced as a celebrity creator. “Personally, I’ve been blown away by some of the talent I’ve seen thanks to people accessing their own platforms through social media. Dance has been an incredibly powerful force my entire life and I look forward to showing the world how transformative, empowering and entertaining it can be.”

“Dancing With Myself” ended its first season on July 19; It has not yet been renewed for a second season. The Voice returns for its 22nd season on NBC in fall 2022.
