In the final episode of the series, titled “Summer Love,” Belly celebrates the debutantes’ prom. Belly chose Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) as her escort, who serves as the perfect date, but when it’s time for the last dance, he’s nowhere to be seen. As Belly searches for Jeremiah, Conrad (Christopher Briney), who was also at the event, approaches her and they dance together. Suddenly, a tense Jeremiah enters the scene and wants to speak to Conrad. It is revealed that Jeremiah learned that his mother, Susannah (Rachel Blanchard), has cancer. Conrad tries to ignore the subject, but Jeremiah connects the dots, eventually realizing that Conrad already knew about her mother’s condition. A shocked Jeremiah punches Conrad and they argue at the party. Susannah ends her fight and asks why. She is shocked to find out her sons know about her cancer.
After the debutante ball is over, Susannah and her sons return to their beach house. They have an emotional heart-to-heart, with both Conrad and Jeremiah asking Susannah to seek treatment. However, Susannah, believing she will not recover, does not want to endure the stress and pain of the treatment and tearfully refuses. Her sons keep trying to convince her to change her mind. Eventually, Susannah agrees and makes the decision to undergo treatment for her sons. She reveals her decision to Laurel (Jackie Chung) and they share an emotional hug. Laurel promises Susannah that she will recover and get better.
In the final scene of the series, Belly and Conrad are sitting on the beach. Conrad apologizes to Belly for being an idiot to her all summer. However, Belly understands now that she knows he was concerned about his mother’s condition. Conrad reveals he wants to tell her so much, but Belly stops him. She says she doesn’t want to take advantage of him when he’s so vulnerable. However, Conrad eventually confesses his feelings towards Belly and tells her that he wants her. They smile at each other and kiss. Taylor Swift’s This Love begins playing in the background as Belly and Conrad get their happy ending. Her story is far from over, however, as Prime Video has renewed The Summer I Turned Pretty for a second season. It will be interesting to see how their love story is explored in the new season.
