TL;DR:

On many occasions, Kate Middleton has had some truly adorable moments with children. Whether the Princess of Wales is holding a baby or giving parenting advice, there’s almost always an impressive scene. However, one commenter says these heartbreaking interactions, particularly a recent Kate video featuring a 3-year-old and a poppy needle, highlight something else; that without Kate, the royal family would be in trouble.

During a visit to Colham Manor’s children’s center on November 9, Kate had a brief chat with Akeem, 3. It ended with the mother-of-three giving the boy her poppy needle.

According to royal commentator Daniela Elser, the exchange sounds “a bit boring” (via New Zealand Herald). Though she wrote, it’s probably exactly what royal aides are hoping to see.

“The perfect alchemy of a member of the House of Windsor in sparkling perfect form; the incredible power of social media and a very sweet kid to throw into the mix,” she said. “It was, quite simply, endearing and heartbreaking.”

“But when everyone has stopped making ‘Awww…’ noises, let’s consider what this moment really brings home and that is; how stuffed the royal family would be without Kate.”

“Support for the monarchy stems not only from the public’s calm intellectual assessment of the institution’s benefits to the national good, but from an emotional response,” Elser said. What keeps the palace afloat is the reverence and affection they inspire.”

Back to the Kate video. It showed that they “can deliver this most precious commodity by the truckload”. If Prince William had married another college sweetheart, Elser opined, she probably wouldn’t have “that elusive, rare star quality that Kate has.”

“If Kate wasn’t there, if William hadn’t voted so well, the monarchy would be more than a little screwed,” the commentator said.

Elser also pointed out the spontaneous feel of the video. A “small handful of parents with smartphones” and Sky News royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills filmed Kate and Akeem’s conversation.

There were no photographers on “stepladders” peering over a wall for a snap. “The only correct shot of this interaction by a photo agency is from Getty and was taken from afar,” Elser said. “That means this wasn’t a calculating publicity stunt.”

What this video sums up perfectly is that not only does Kate understand the job — to charm the public one at a time, turning hearts and minds to the monarchy day after day, and that this is a lifetime marathon of a task — but she is a woman who seems to really enjoy her work,” she continued.

Perhaps the latest polls are further proof that Kate is essential to the royal family. She may not have the #1 rank of most influential king. That honor went to the late Queen Elizabeth II. But she took the no. 2 digit.
