American Idol has aired for 20 seasons, and that means 20 groups of finalists have gone through the system and come out the other side. Now, some of those finalists have revealed behind-the-scenes details they hadn’t previously shared.

In an interview with Insider, Blake Lewis, runner-up on the show’s sixth season, said he was “forced” into beatboxing and wasn’t happy with how the show portrayed him.

Lewis was a beatboxing champion before auditioning for “American Idol,” according to Insiders.

During the interview, Lewis shared that he had said several times that he didn’t want to beatbox during his audition. The judges in season six were Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell.

Before contestants ever appear before the American Idol judges, they go through auditions with producers where they showcase their talent.

In Lewis’ case, he said he felt the judges were “mocking” him during his audition.

“I had all these awards and when I got to Paula, Simon and Rany, they were like, ‘Oh, Mr. Bigshot,'” he said, according to the outlet.

He added, “Randy said, ‘Come on man. It says you are a beatbox champion. Just give us a little something.”

Lewis shared that he told the judges “three times” but then felt he had to do it since they kept asking him.

“They made me do it,” he told the outlet. “And then how they cut it, they made it look like I was cocky.”

Cowell, according to the singer, then told him that he wasn’t as good as he thought.

According to insiders, Lewis was “pissed” when he saw the episodes that aired.

“I was like, ‘Oh great, now I’m hated by my beatbox community, this niche art form, because they turn me into a gimmick,'” Lewis told Insider, adding, “This never goes down the way they show it.”

He almost won the show, losing only to Jordin Sparks.

Current American Idol judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie performed on Live! With Kelly and Ryan on June 22, 2022 to talk all things American Idol.

The judges talked about why they thought American Idol was the best place for aspiring artists and how they started earning the trust of rising stars. However, that doesn’t mean that every artist who does well on the show is also successful in the music industry.

“We’re in our fifth season as judges…but I think the world is changing, there are new stars being born every day and there’s so much being posted all over social media that it makes you stand out even more must,” she said.

She added that attendees need to use more than just the American Idol platform and also focus on social media.

“American Idol” is expected to return in spring 2023 for the show’s 21st season. It is expected that each of the three judges and host Ryan Seacrest will return.
