“I feel like earlier in my career I trained more to be a certain size or fit into a certain aesthetic that I thought I wanted to be,” she told PEOPLE, referencing beginning her singing career at the age of 22 after winning American Idol. “And now I feel like I’m training more to be strong and have energy and longevity,” Underwood added.

Underwood has two sons: three-year-old Jacob and seven-year-old Isaiah. She wants to be in their lives for as long as possible and be able to be an active presence as they grow up, so maintaining her fitness was crucial. “It’s really playing the long game, right?” She said, adding: “I trained a lot and was frustrated because it wasn’t the results I wanted. I feel like now at this point in my life you’re really learning that it’s a lifestyle, it’s balance. It’s all about taking care of yourself.”
The Grammy winner admits it’s easier to maintain a regular exercise regimen when she’s away because she feels her hands are usually tied at home with her children, who she shares with husband Mike Fisher. “When I’m home, I feel like I’m doing it. I do the laundry, I pack lunch, I always clean,” explains Underwood. “So when I’m traveling and staying on a bus or in a hotel room, I don’t have to do all those things to have a little free time. My schedule is still very regimented and there are all these things I do, but my mornings are a little more flexible.”
Underwood is now preparing for the second leg of their “Denim & Strass” arena tour.
