For many years it has been one of the greats in German television entertainment. However, Anke Engelke claims in an interview that she has now passed the peak of her popularity.
With programs like “Die Wochenshow”, “Danke Anke!” or “Ladykracher” has been making TV audiences laugh for decades. With her incomparable sense of humor, she has shaped the German comedy landscape like no other. In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, she emphasized that there was one thing that was always important to her: “being genuine” and “having one’s own credibility”.
However, they are of little interest in what their effect is on the public. “Maybe the weather is even more important to me than my standing, my image,” said the 55-year-old. She “doesn’t care whether people like her work, but I don’t want it to be so important that it becomes my motivation”. Then she would go into an “addiction”, “and I think addictions are so bad”.
Engelke does not want to think about their “effect. It is not a nice idea that so many people have an opinion about you.” The time when they knew “very, very many people” is over anyway. It was “a concept, a brand”, but “now many are dying away, and the young people, the 14-year-olds, may just know me from ‘LOL'”.
The talk is of the successful show “LOL: Last One Laughing”, which is the most popular format on Amazon Prime Video in Germany, as the streaming service announced in October. No wonder that a third season is already being planned. Engelke, who “doesn’t see herself as a comedian”, took part in both of the previously available ones.
In an interview with the news agency spot on news, she said in early October whether she would take part again. “Always. I would always do it. Because it’s such an extraordinary experiment. You rarely experience anything in our crazy job that is so unpredictable. […] What I experienced the first and second time ‘LOL’ could not be foreseen. None of that! It’s in great shape, “she said.
