‘Mayor of Kingstown’ Review: Jeremy Renner-Starrer sheds light on the harsh prison reality

In the very first episode of the first season of the crime series, the only colored characters were a handful of prison guards, the prisoners themselves, and the Crips drug dealer called Bunny (Tobi Bamtefa). The other major characters were played by white male actors, none of whom have the ideal “good guy” personality. Aside from Wiest, who plays the vital role of a prison teacher, her purpose is not fully explored in the series’ plot; the only other important women were the executed inmate’s sister, a stripper, and a prostitute.

Aside from working on the cast representation, after watching the first episode, viewers are sure to have more questions than answers, but that’s also the important factor that gets the show’s audience to the edge of their seats to be intrigued enough to waiting for the next episode. The thriller is undoubtedly a viewing experience in itself, with its gritty drama that offers a new perspective and an entirely different take on the prison industry that was just enough to leave a lasting impression.

Episode 1 of the first season of ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ can be streamed on Paramount +.
