The owner of website questioned the authenticity of the historical memento provided by Ripley’s Kardashian

Kim Kardashian recently made headlines when she wore Marilyn Monroe’s gold gown to the 2022 Met Gala and walked the red carpet in grace. However, a new controversy has erupted when, according to Monroe historian Scott Fortner, the reality star was reportedly presented with fake locks of Monroe’s golden hair while visiting Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum in Orlando, Fla. He confirmed the argument by providing evidence.

On Friday, May 6, Fortner, owner of website, questioned the authenticity of the historical memento that Ripley’s Kardashian, 41, provided before her performance at last week’s Met Gala. Fortner wrote on Instagram, “News Alert: Marilyn Monroe Hair Gifted to Kardashian by Ripley’s is fake.” He also posted a screenshot of another strand of Kardashian’s hair that was spotted in her dressing room for the Met Galas. The hair given to Kim was reportedly cut from Monroe’s hair by legendary hairstylist Robert Champion before her historic appearance on President John F. Kennedy’s birthday. Fortner claimed Kenneth Battelle, not Robert Champion, cut the hair, and he confirmed this by posting a receipt from a beauty salon.

Kardashian’s jaw dropped when a museum employee handed her the locks of hair, which were secured in a round metal case, in a video Ripley’s posted to Instagram last Tuesday, May 3. The same clip was posted to Fortner’s Instagram page, along with a screenshot of Ripley outlining the origins of the hair and what he claims is a receipt from the hair salon that worked on Monroe’s cap in 1962. When Kardashian was gifted a lock of hair from Monroe, Kardashian hugged Ripley’s crew and said it was “special.” According to Ripley’s caption: “During @KimKardashian’s Met Gala dress rehearsal at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! HQ, our team surprised her with a silver box containing a real lock of Marilyn’s iconic platinum hair. The team at Ripley also stocked her Met Gala dressing room with a treasure trove of Marilyn Monroe and JFK memorabilia to inspire her look.”

According to a spokeswoman for Ripley’s, the lock of hair given to the celebrity was real and not the same as the hair that was spotted in her dressing room ahead of the 2022 Met Gala. They claimed that the strand of hair was presented to Champion by Marilyn Monroe, although it was not trimmed by Champion. They also said the cut was reviewed by a hair collector specialist.
