Finally, in 2022 we see several K-pop girl groups surpassing the one million mark, led by Blackpink, who were the first million sellers in 2020

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: In recent years, the internet has wondered why girl groups have not been able to reach the same milestones as boy groups despite being popular. Big names like TWICE or Red Velvet stuck with 330,000 to 400,000 sales in the first few days, while boy bands could easily reach 1 million sales, as seen in the case of NCT, Enhypen or Stray Kids. Well not anymore as Blackpink hits two million sellers and closely followed by aespa, Itzy and TWICE, we are in the girl band era.

2022 can be considered the girl group era as we have had several iconic reunions like those of 2NE1, Girls’ Generation and EXID. Several deserved girl groups like (G)I-DLE, NewJeans and IVE finally reach the million mark and lead the charts. Even less popular acts get their time to shine as seen with Dreamcatcher, fromis_9 and Brave Girls. Many even credited SM for forming NCT 127, making their comeback on the same day as Blackpink, as the girl group was predicted to take over charts, social media and sales.

Both NCT 127 and Blackpink released their latest albums on the same day, and while the boy band has had a good run on recent releases, some think 2 Baddies was overshadowed by Blackpink’s Born Pink. Blackpink becomes the first girl group to hit 2 million sales, even in its first week, according to Circle Chart, which is also considering shipping to retailers. On another chart, the Hanteo Chart, it should also be noted that the million-seller NCT 127 reached the 1.54 million mark at the same time as Blackpink.

Since both NCT 127 and Blackpink debuted in the same year, Knetz was amused when they hit their career peak at the same time. One commented: “Both groups are at their career peak. Congratulations, congratulations.” Another said, “Wow, they really go head to head, they’re both amazing.” One added, “Didn’t they also debut in the same year?ㅋㅋㅋㅋ To see them both at their career peak, makes me happy.”

One multifan said, “Waiting for nct 127 and blackpink’s joint interview at inkigayo.” One added, “That blackpink and aespa sell almost like men’s groups is a win for women.” One fan tweeted, “Thanks for you saved the girl group music of 2022.” Another joked, “2022 – kpop girl group era for me slayyyy.”
