A DAD has told how he struggled to buy his first home for just £18,500 – but now owns a £3.5million mansion.

Mat Rees, 43, worked three jobs to scrape together enough to buy his first home when he was 18, but has since shot up the real estate ladder.

He and his wife Luicida, 32, now live in a beautiful £3,550,000 five-bed home in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

But Mat came from humble beginnings – he bought his first house in Moss Side for £18,500 in Moss Side, Manchester.

He told Manchester Evening News: “I’ve had three jobs that have helped me save up for it.

“I thought this one in Moss Side would be easy to rent and all I needed was a £1,000 deposit, so I bought it and rented it out – that was really the start.

“By the time I was 25, I had about 25 houses, but when the credit crunch hit, I sold most of them.

“I was working in the pub business at the time and I wanted to be a regional manager, which was always my plan, but once I started buying houses it changed my mind.”

The qualified mortgage advisor then met Luicida – and the couple continued to buy and rent houses.

Then, late last year, they spotted their dream villa for sale – and couldn’t help but take a look.

He explained: “The street it’s on is one I’ve always walked and admired. It is a prestigious private road in an area popular with footballers and celebrities.

“When we walked in we just loved it. I said, “Oh my god, we shouldn’t have come.”

“If you don’t want to move, never look at a house because you end up just wanting to move.

“We fell in love with the house and I made an offer, it was accepted and it was within a week.”

The spacious house has five reception rooms, a spacious kitchen, a home office, a cinema room, a leisure suite with an indoor pool, sauna and fitness room, two balconies and a huge garden.

But they still plan to expand and renovate the house in the new year.

Mat explained: “I think once the renovations are complete it will be what we would call a forever home. But at the same time we expect the value to probably double, so the good risk is that someone will come and offer us a lot of money for it.”

Mat now has advice for home seekers looking to climb the career ladder.

He said: “The advice I would give is to never give up. Whether you’re buying your first property to climb the corporate ladder or buying your 20th, you just have to go ahead and look for those opportunities.

“I lost a lot of hope after the credit crunch when I sold my properties and it would have been easy for me to quit at the time, but I started again because I knew what I wanted and made the decision to do it.

“My advice would always be to buy a house as young as possible. I will encourage my kids when they are old enough because once you own it it usually starts to appreciate in value. I’m really glad I bought this ASAP and I wish I would have bought more when I was younger.

“I’m very proud of my home and how I got to where I am today, but unfortunately I’m the kind of person who always wants to make things better, so I’m really excited about the renovation and the plans for that have make the house phenomenal. I know I’m very lucky to have what I have.”
