Gina Rodriguez was once asked to wear a “tight black dress” to assess if she was “pretty enough” for a role

Gina Rodriguez is an actress with extensive experience in TV shows and theater productions. Nor is she silenced when it comes to issues that are important to her, like sexism in Hollywood. In 2015, the star joined a group of other successful women to talk about her own experiences with sexism. Rodriguez spoke about an audition where she was actually asked to don a skintight dress as part of the process.

In a 2015 roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rodriguez shared her experiences of sexism in Hollywood. “I was ready for a role and I auditioned for the role. They say, ‘We love her. But can she come back in a tight black dress?’ I said, “That doesn’t make sense for the character,” Rodriguez explained, according to BuzzFeed.

“They said, ‘We need to know if you’re pretty enough to be on the cover of a magazine,'” Rodriguez added. She said the experience made her feel less than and left out. Though she was an industry professional at the time and skilled at playing a variety of characters.

Rodriguez knows there’s a lot of pressure on women in the entertainment industry to look a certain way. And she’s even admitted that she’s dealt with some issues because of it. In an interview with Yahoo, Rodriguez revealed: “Of course I was under pressure. Of course I fell for the culture.” According to HuffPost, Rodriguez said that over time she accepted her body and understood that it’s okay not to look like a supermodel. Even in an industry that tends to glorify ultra-thinness.

“You go to TV and you go to the movies and that adds 10 pounds to it and I don’t look like a skinny mini and the truth is that’s okay too and that’s nice too,” Rodriguez noted. The actor doesn’t just talk. She leads the way and regularly speaks out for organizations that promote diversity and inclusion in Hollywood. According to People Magazine, she’s even started her own production company, I Can and I Will, which works to create projects that feature minority and Latino people in front of and behind the camera.

Rodriguez is known for her winning streak Jane the maiden, which aired from 2014 to 2019. But it had its beginning long before that. Rogriguez began acting in theatrical productions in the early 2000s and transitioned to television roles not long after. While she managed to land a number of small roles on television shows such as law & orderHer big break came in 2012 when she starred in the independent film drama Filly Brown.

According to IMDb, Rodriguez received critical and commercial acclaim for Jane the maiden, even won a Golden Globe Award in 2015 for her role in the popular drama series. She has also acted in many films including Kajillionaire, annihilationand someone great. Rogriguez has earned a reputation as a versatile performer with the ability to handle comedy scenes with ease. She is also socially conscious, a fact many of her fans and followers appreciate.
