Some “American Idol” fans are upset after the top 3 contestants for season 20 were announced on May 15, 2022.

During the episode, the top five contestants – Fritz Hager, Noah Thompson, Huntergirl, Leah Marlene and Nicolina – made two appearances. First they played a song by Carrie Underwood and then another song of their choice.

At the end of the episode, Ryan Seacrest announced which of the contestants was sent home, and in a somewhat shocking twist, Fritz Hager was one of those contestants. Fans immediately took to social media to talk about Hager.

In a Reddit thread serving as a Hager appreciation thread, some fans called out the show and said that Hager was mugged.

“ROBBED!” one person wrote.

One person agreed, writing, “To be honest I don’t think I’ll be tuning in to the rest of the show. Fritz was the only candidate I followed week after week. I just don’t care that much about the other candidates. He was robbed.”

Another commented, “This show is complete rubbish.”

Others were just sad that Fritz Hager would no longer be in the competition.

“I’m heartbroken,” one person wrote. “I haven’t watched KI religious in years and Fritz was the ONLY reason I watched this year.”

Another person commented: “Did anyone else cry? I’m devastated that we didn’t get a fiancé for Leah and Fritz. Nicolina did great too. Just unbelievable. They should just rename it Country Idol.”

Many others commented on Hager’s talent and songwriting skills.

“An INCREDIBLE talent,” reads one reply to the thread. “So humble and ADORABLE. His skills as a composer and as a singer AND lyricist? Idol wasn’t ready for him.”

Another said the elimination was “shocking” and someone else agreed with them, writing: “Probably one of the only really shocking moments in the ABC era, the other was Alejandro losing to Laine. When Fritz got eliminated tonight I literally and involuntarily went ‘F***!’ to my idol viewing companion.”

Hager will still appear in the finale, as the entire Season 20 Top 10 will perform throughout the three-hour episode. He has encouraged his fans to support his girlfriend Leah Marlene who made it to the finals.

American Idol judge Luke Bryan said Access Hollywood according to the top 7 performances, he considers Noah Thompson to be the front runner in the competition.

“You know, I think for the top 5, at this point enjoy it, at this point enjoy it, you made it into the top 5, you’re getting the best exposure you could ever ask for and ask for, and I think you’re just gotta get up and have fun and just pick a few songs that really allow you to connect,” Bryan said. “I think it’s interesting, you know, a lot of the fans who vote have probably already chosen their favourites. And I think it will be a close race.”

He went on to share his specific thoughts on which of the remaining contestants – Noah Thompson, Leah Marlene, Fritz Hager, HunterGirl and Nicolina – were best placed to win the competition.

“When I look at how Noah can just humbly connect, I think America really loves these stories,” shared the American Idol judge. “But I think it’s everyone’s game, I really do. I mean everyone in the top 5 has the things that make them stand out.”

He ended by saying, “I think Noah might be my frontrunner right now.”
