The nominations for the 27th Annual Scottish Bar & Pub Awards 2022 close on 30 June.
This competition has 18 categories including Dog Friendly Pub of the Year and Whiskey Bar of the Year. However, they still attract interest when it comes to entries for the Hotel Bar category, which is in its second year and is sponsored by Old Tom Gin 1821 of St Andrews.
We’d like to suggest a few potential candidates in Edinburgh, as the capital has really kicked ass when it comes to hotel bars in recent years. They no longer have that slightly shabby corporate vibe, but they’re top-notch.
Lilith’s Lounge at the House of Gods, www.houseofgodshotel.com
Forget about ordering a cocktail straight from the menu. In this Cowgate hotel’s new bar, you can get Lilith, aka Queen of the Damned, to order for you after she uses her tarot cards to choose an appropriate drink. Hopefully you’ll end up with something decent by hanging out in this sexy space with its Jackie Collins-style leopard print pillows and cobra stem lamps.
Nor’ Loft at Market Street Hotel, www.marketstreethotel.co.uk
We often forget this four-star hotel, and we think others might as well, as it’s never too over the top. Take the elevator up to the seventh floor, where you can buy champagne by the glass, starting at the very reasonable £9.50 for the Justerini & Brooks 250th Anniversary cuvée, and marvel at the Hallam Foe-like view on the roof. They also serve cocktails and small plates.
The Commons Club Bar at the Virgin Hotel Edinburgh, www.virginhotels.com
Housed in Indian buildings at the entrance to Victoria Street, this bar is fresh as hell. It features comfortable leather banquettes along with wood paneling and irreverent artwork. As for drinks, the focus is on cocktails, with versions like Breakfast in the Highlands, which is effectively a meal in a glass with ingredients like Glenfiddich 15 Single Malt Whisky, Brown Butter, Toasted Oat Amontillado Sherry, Edinburgh Honey Co Heather Honey and Bitter is Sling Kensington Aromatic. You can also try one of their martini flights.
