A Dancing With the Stars graduate mourns a heartbreaking loss.
On July 12, 2022, Lance Bass shared the tragic news that his grandmother had passed away.
“This week my family lost our beloved matriarch Betty ‘Mimi’ Pulliam. She was filled with so much love, humor and beauty to the very end. Her bright spirit and memory will live on every time I see her in sweet Alexander’s face and shout out “Violet Betty!” when our little girl goes about her usual shenanigans,” Bass commented on an Instagram post that included some special memories.
“She meant the world to me and although I am filled with a deep sadness, I can smile through the tears knowing that she is in a much better place with my dad. Until we meet again, my sweet Mimi,” he added.
Here’s what you need to know:
Bass grew up very close to his grandparents and it’s clear that his Mimi was very special to him. In fact, he held her tight even when the two couldn’t be together. For example, he spoke to Eating Well after welcoming his twins in October 2021 and mentioned that he would be making his grandmother’s stuffing on Thanksgiving.
“My Mimi makes the best dressing for Thanksgiving and she taught me how to make it,” he told the outlet.
Bass and Turchin named their daughter after Pulliam. On Oct. 14, 2021, Bass shared a photo of his babies’ birth certificates. He and Turchin named their daughter Violet Betty and gave her Pulliam’s first name as her middle name.
“The baby dragons have arrived!! I can’t express how much love I’m feeling right now. Thank you for all the lovely wishes. It meant a lot. Well, how do you change a diaper??! Ahhhhhhhh,” Bass captioned the photo.
Bass’ post included several family photos with wife Betty in the middle, which really showed that she was the matriarch of the family. In the first photo, Bass snuggled up to his Mimi on a couch and the two held hands.
In the next photo, Pulliam stood between Bass and his husband, Michael Turchin, both of whom were wearing suit jackets. Bass also shared other family memories, some more casual gatherings and others at family gatherings.
Shortly after Bass shared the news of his grandmother’s death on Instagram, several people took to the comments section to wish him and his family their condolences and well.
“I’m sorry for the loss of your family,” wrote Bravo’s Andy Cohen.
“I’m so sorry…” added Felicia Culotta, Britney Spears’ former assistant.
“I’m so sorry to hear about your loss, Lance. i send you love She really was a beautiful woman,” read another comment.
“Oh Lance, I’m so sorry for your loss. I love that Violet Betty shares her name,” said another.
“Sending love and light to you and your family at this time of loss,” added ’80s singer Debbie Gibson.
“Oh Lance, I’m so sorry! Sending you love,” read a sixth comment.
