CORONATION Street has been rocked by more Ofcom complaints after fans lashed out at a “disgusting” racism storyline.
The ITV soap last week received a spate of complaints following the story about a character who was radicalized by an extremist.
The schoolboy – who is played by actor Paddy Bever in the ITV soap – was overnight exposed to new girlfriend Lauren’s racist behaviour.
Ofcom has announced that Coronation Street has received 139 complaints from viewers about the storyline involving young Max Turner.
Max, who is played by Paddy Bever in the ITV soap, was radicalized by Griff Reynolds, played by Angela Griffin, last month.
Now the young character has been indoctrinated into her racist ways by her new friend Lauren, shocking viewers.
In tense scenes, Max was shown a disturbing anti-Muslim propaganda film before defending his girlfriend against Alya, who came to him concerned about Lauren’s racist behavior.
Horrified to see Max become radicalized, fans took to Twitter to complain during last week’s episodes.
One wrote, “Max you’re smarter than that… I hoped,” while another said, “Max is being radicalized and it’s scary to watch.”
A third chimed in: “This story with Max is awful. I know it’s going on, but it’s really awful!”
But things only got worse during the week when the teenage character hit on a refugee from Iraq, prompting Ofcom complaints.
Ofcom on November 16 revealed 139 complaints which they said were “related to a history of racist violence”.
It comes after fans of the soap predicted a dark and sickening turn for Max, convinced he and his girlfriend Lauren are related.
The teenager portrayed by Paddy Bever was isolated and bullied when he first encountered Griff before becoming involved in a gang.
The hard-hitting racism tale sees the shady activist grooming him and getting him to join his far-right group.
Max’s new “friends” turn him against Muslims and his former employers at Speed Daal, including his girlfriend Lauren.
The young girl gains influence over Max and has even taken him to bed to ensure his loyalty, although she disagrees with some of Griff’s views.
But after mistaking her for Kelly Neelan, viewers are becoming more and more convinced that she could be Max’s half-sister.
Soap fans have all urged the youngster to “dispose of” his new racist friends, particularly after an attack on Daryan that aired on Monday.
Coronation Street airs weekdays from 8pm on ITV
