Bridgeton Season 3 focuses on the love story of Colin and Penelope. Throughout the series, Colin became a little obsessed with his ideas about chivalry and honor. He tries to run away with Marina Thompson in Season 1 and saves the Featheringtons from Cousin Jack in Season 2. However, Colin can be naive and seriously hurts Penelope’s feelings with the conversation she overheard. Hopefully his concern for doing the right thing will lead him to ask her forgiveness in Season 3.
In every season of Bridgeton So far, Colin has attempted some sort of heroic or chivalrous gesture. In the first season, he courts Marina Thompson and hopes to make her his wife. However, Colin is a bit confused as to what will actually make him happy.
“He wants to have a purpose and feel like he can make decisions, like telling Marina they’re going to run off to Gretna Green and get married,” Luke Newton told Entertainment Weekly. “I think the idea of which was far more romantic and attractive to him than he actually felt.”
In the season 2 finale, Colin confronts Lord Jack Featherington for betraying his own family (unaware that Lady Featherington was involved). He then dances with Penelope, assuring her that he will confront Jack again if he doesn’t make things right and always looks out for her.
“He really loves the idea of doing the right thing more than the thing itself. But I love him for that, that fixation on honor. I find it very interesting,” Shonda Rhimes remarked to EW.
Of course, Colin’s honorable behavior doesn’t last the whole episode. Penelope is overheard telling a group of men that he “would never dream of courting Penelope Featherington”. Unfortunately, that’s the clue Bridgeton stopped going in season 3.
Colin spent the time between seasons 1 and 2 of Bridgeton to travel around the world. The third Bridgerton son is looking for more than an exotic vacation from his trip. “He’s always trying to change,” Shondaland executive producer Betsy Beers told EW.
“And he hopes the world will let him know about it, or at least show him the way,” Rhimes added. “Instead he keeps trying to save women — that’s his instinct, he thinks that will do the trick.”
Bridgeton Season 3 focuses on the love story of Colin and Penelope. Colin clearly needs more in his life than galloping around the world saving damsels in distress. “I think once he ticks it off his list, he feels his lack of purpose and drive even more,” Newton said of Colin’s travels. “It’s this ‘What’s next? What do I do next?'” Reestablishing his relationship with Penelope is a good starting point for Season 3.
