Radu Judes Golden Bear Winner starts with an amateur sex tape and turns into a crazy synopsis of Romania’s culture and dark history. You will not stop looking

Jude combines his own narrative with excerpts from social media footage, hardcore pornography, mini-history lessons, and philosophical treatises. This is not your typical popcorn tariff.

Brief description of the style and structure of Radu Jude’s bizarre independent film Bad luck hammering or crazy porn is a gigantic task. The Romanian winner of the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin Film Festival is ambitious to say the least. It throws its ideas on politics, sexuality and capitalism playfully on the wall in a kind of chaotic-Dadaist manner and then points them out with the grinning demeanor of a joking child prodigy.

Allegedly, the film is about a prestigious school history teacher, Emi (Katia Pascariu), whose amateur sex tape with her husband was accidentally leaked online. When her students’ parents find out, they request a meeting to decide if she should be asked to quit her job. But there’s no traditional trajectory or a direct slap on sexual hypocrisy here: it’s wrapped up in an honestly wild confrontation with Romanian culture as a whole.

The first act moves at a leisurely pace as it takes Emi around town on errands. Jude’s camera listlessly wanders past random street encounters; the people around them seem to be brimming with a kind of growing hostility.

This hostility is exposed in the second section of the film, where Jude leaves Emi and her stressful day to present what he calls an AZ “Dictionary of Anecdotes, Signs, and Wonders,” the zigzag between anti-Roma racism , subtle and unsubtle misogyny, the two repressive political systems of Romania’s past (fascism and communism) and the insidious leakage of consumerism.

Finally, the third act plunges into the drama of Emi’s socially distant school meeting, in which she is scourged by a hypocritical cast of standard characters.

The transgressive role of pornography is played as morally neutral; Ultimately, in a very sick world, when tweens find out about a sex tape, it’s an easy social problem. Bad luck hammering or crazy porn combines a hiking trip report through an unsightly urban landscape of Bucharest with a winking history lesson and more. His kaleidoscopic attack on conservative social mores has to be seen to be believed.
