On January 4th, ASTRO’s sub-unit MOONBIN&SANHA released a new mini-album entitled INCENSE. After the K-pop group was released INCENSEShowbiz Cheat Sheet emailed members MOON BIN and YOON SAN-HA questions about the making of the EP.

This interview has been edited and abridged.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: INCENSE been out for a few days now. What do you hope fans will take away from the EP?

MOON AM: We would like to imprint MOONBIN&SANHA’s unique “INCENSE” to remind them of our “Fragrance” whenever they listen to our music or see our performances.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: “Madness” is the title track of the EP and the chorus is super catchy. Why do you think “Madness” is the best choice to become the lead single?

YOON SAN-HA: We chose “Madness” as the title track because we thought it was the best track to show our charms through lyrics and melody.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: Do you have a favorite memory or any memorable behind-the-scenes stories from the making? INCENSE?

MOON AM: I had a lot of fun recording! It was especially fun because we did a lot of narration and choral recordings.

YOON SAN-HA: The recording process was unforgettable for me too. While working on “Madness” I took on new challenges like rapping and hitting high notes. There were some challenging parts but overall it was a great experience.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: You both contributed to the songwriting of this album. What is your favorite part of songwriting and what aspect do you find the most difficult?

MOON AM: I’ve always been a fan of pop and R&B genres, so I did the melody for “Desire” with another composer and the whole process felt very natural. It was very interesting to compose my own solo track in my favorite music genre.

YOON SAN-HA: I usually listen to ballads or calm music and I think this taste in music influenced me while working on my solo track. It was a lot of fun working on a genre I enjoy all the time!

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: When you work on music together, do you both have the same process when it comes to songwriting and learning choreography? Or do you have opposing approaches?

YOON SAN-HA: We have our own way of working. As this was my first time composing and writing lyrics, I asked BIN to listen to the song when I was done. Then he gave me helpful feedback and advice to improve the song.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: INCENSE is your third EP since debuting in 2020. What have you learned from working together as a sub-unit over the years?

MOON AM: In recent years, we wanted to show a different side than ASTRO with MOONBIN&SANHA unit albums. We have studied, experienced and learned a lot, focusing on showing different sides of ourselves. Luckily we’ve had positive reactions from a lot of people and so far we’ve been able to release albums as a unit.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: You decided to release music as a sub-unit after co-hosting a music show. Why do you think the chemistry between you two is so strong as a team?

MOON AM: I think our chemistry is quite natural because we spent many years together. Unlike group activities, unit activities only require us to fill the entire stage. It was easier for us to build chemistry as a unit on stage because we had known each other for a long time.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: What is the most important thing you learned about yourself or each other after creating it? INCENSE together?

MOON AM: I think SAN-HA will become a veteran.
