The corona pandemic is still having an impact on the hardware market. Due to ongoing delivery problems with the Playstation 5, Sony intends to continue producing its predecessor, the Playstation 4, this year
Sony wants to continue producing the Playstation 4 this year, writes Bloomberg, citing a spokesman for the group. Unspecified sources had reported that Sony wants to produce about one million Playstation 4 this year. An internal plan by the group has scheduled the end of production of the console for 2021.
Bloomberg suspects that Sony wants to cushion the ongoing delivery bottlenecks for the Playstation 5 by producing the old console. The older console uses less advanced chips and is easier to manufacture. In addition, the Playstation 4 is a cheap alternative to the PS5.
Sony’s goal with the Playstation 5 was actually to make a quick transition to the new generation of consoles. Playstation boss Jim Ryan said in an interview with Gamesindustry.biz three years ago: One of the main tasks of the group is to get the transition done on an unprecedented scale and speed.
The corona pandemic had influenced development throughout the games industry and triggered high demand for consoles. At the same time, hardware components became scarce due to production downtime.
Getting a new Playstation 5 regularly through retail is associated with good luck even more than a year after its release. On auction platforms like Ebay, sellers ask far more than the price set by Sony.
According to Bloomberg, it is difficult for game console manufacturers to get chips for audio and power components. Hardware for wireless communication is also poorly available.
The games market is Sony’s biggest source of income. Nevertheless, the group is looking for other areas to expand its growth. At CES 2022, the company presented a new version of its virtual reality glasses – the Playstation VR 2.
In addition, the group is preparing for the introduction of a car. The company wants to set up a mobility subsidiary for this purpose in the spring.
