In Ukraine there was a massive hacker attack on government websites overnight. Homepages of important ministries could not be accessed.
Ukrainian government websites were the target of a massive hacker attack last night. The Ministry of Education and Research in Kiev said on its Facebook page that the ministry’s website was temporarily down after the “widespread” attack. The websites of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the cabinet were also unavailable.
The website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs could not be accessed either. In the early morning, the words “Be afraid and expect the worst” were temporarily read there in Ukrainian, Russian and Polish.
A police unit specializing in cyber attacks has started investigations, the Department of Energy said. It is unclear who is behind the attack.
The attack comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West over the Ukraine conflict.
With a massive Russian troop deployment on the border with Ukraine, there are fears Moscow could attack the neighboring country. Several diplomatic crisis talks in the past few days were intended to ease tensions, but failed to bring about a breakthrough.
