Liberation from Kira Weidle: After a mixed performance recently, the ski racer made people sit up and take notice with second place in the downhill race in Zauchensee. Only a Swiss woman was better.

Ski racer Kira Weidle has freed herself from her slump and achieved the best World Cup result of her career in the downhill race in Zauchensee. The 25-year-old from Starnberg raced to second place on Saturday and was only beaten by the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami, 0.10 seconds behind. Third was Ramona Siebenhofer (+ 0.44) from Austria.

After her bumpy start to the season and tenth, seventh and 39th place in the downhill, Weidle set the first big exclamation mark around three weeks before the start of the Winter Olympics. For the first time this winter, the Vice World Champion managed to show her good training results in competition.

The great dominator Sofia Goggia, who had previously won all three races in the discipline, retired after a driving error. Clearly in the lead, the Italian fell and crashed into the safety net. She didn’t appear to have been seriously injured at first.
