Before he was killed in a drive-by shooting in 1996, Tupak claimed he was shot five times by attackers two years earlier in New York, but now a detective has suggested that the rapper shot himself

A senior detective has unmasked the “urban legend” associated with the shooting of Tupac Shakur two years before he was murdered.

Tupac was an iconic figure and is considered one of America’s greatest rappers of all time, writing lyrics that dealt with social issues and activism.

The rapper was murdered in 1996, when he was only 25, when he was shot dead on a drive-by shoot in Las Vegas.

Tupac was ambushed in New York two years earlier and claimed to have been shot several times by his attackers.

Greg Kading was hired to investigate the murders of Tupac and Biggie in 2006, years after their murders. After having the opportunity to search the original files, he claims to have debunked some of the myths surrounding the alleged assassination attempt.

In an interview with the detective on his Anything Goes podcast, host James English asked if the 1994 attack was an attempt to rob or kill Tupac.

“No, it was to discipline him,” Greg replied. “They obviously didn’t go there to kill him because they could have killed him if that was their intention.

“They hit him to discipline him because he talked about salary and was kind of demanding.”

So Greg suggested that Jimmy Rosemond, a music manager, coordinated the ambush to show Tupac who the boss was.

And when James argued that Tupac’s five shootings could be viewed as more than sending a message, the detective replied that those facts were “very controversial.”

“First of all, he wasn’t shot in the head. Most people believe that he was hit with a gun and sustained some serious cuts, ”Greg continued.

“Had he been shot in the head at close range, there would never have been a Tupac death row, he would have been dead on the spot.

“He was hit over the head with a pistol while trying to pull his own pistol from his waistband in the heat of the moment, he shot himself, and that bullet goes through his leg, through his groin … He shoots himself.

“And then, of course, his hand gets torn because he didn’t have a good grip on it when he picked up the gun – which is one of the reasons it accidentally discharged – and then the slide came back and cut his finger in his path. “His thumb.

“So the idea that he was shot five times is just an urban legend.”

After setting out how he believed Tupac sustained the injuries, Greg claimed the rapper may have publicly exaggerated them to develop his Hardman status.

He added, “When you’re writing a song about what happened, you want to look as bad as possible, so why not overdo it?

“You’re not going to write a song that says, ‘Hey, my ass got kicked and I shot myself in the balls, you won’t say that.”

Despite Tupac’s enormous public profile, no one has yet been convicted of Tupac’s murder, which occurred two years after his first attack.
