A swastika flag lies over the coffin, the mourners stretch their arms in a fascist greeting: The secret video of a funeral in Rome causes horror in Italy.

The funeral of a member of the right-wing Italian group Forza Nuova (FN) with a swastika flag caused horror in the Catholic Church. This is a hideous symbol and incompatible with Christianity, declared the Diocese of Rome.

The coffin of the 44-year-old Alessia Augello was covered with a red swastika flag at the funeral in Rome on Monday, as can be seen in a photo of the daily newspaper “La Repubblica”.

Some participants in the memorial service in the Church of Santa Lucia also made gestures in the sense of this “extremist ideology”, the diocese said in a statement. According to “La Repubblica”, the police were present at the funeral and started an investigation.

This video, which was shared on Twitter, shows the scene in front of the church – including how many of the guests raise their arms in the Hitler salute:

The Jewish community in Rome was also appalled by the recordings. “It is unacceptable that the swastika flag is shown in public with impunity to this day, especially in a city whose Jewish population was deported by the Nazis and their fascist collaborators,” it said in a statement. In October 1943, more than 1,000 Jewish Romans were deported to German extermination camps. Only 16 of them returned after World War II.
