Thomas Haldenwang identifies a new scene of enemies of the state who want to give the impression that the state is failing. Dhe President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution is deeply concerned about what could follow after the Corona crisis.

The President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwang, has warned that stricter government regulations on climate protection could mobilize resistance from extremists. “An intensification of state measures to curb climate change could be perceived as unlawful and rejected,” Haldenwang told the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung”.

He thinks it is conceivable that anti-state extremists who are currently mobilizing against the corona measures will look for a new topic after the end of the pandemic – this could be climate policy.

Haldenwang expressed concern that more and more radical enemies of the state were mingling with the Corona demonstrators. “They fundamentally reject our democratic political system,” he said. This scene is characterized by the fact that it does not connect ideological brackets, but contempt for the democratic constitutional state and its representatives.

The pandemic is “just the hook” for this radicalized scene, said Haldenwang. “Whether it’s Corona or refugee policy or the flood disaster: you saw some of the same people trying to give the impression that the state was failing and not doing anything for the people.” The Office for the Protection of the Constitution is observing this new scene in a new so-called phenomenon area.
