When BYU and Gonzaga clash on court, the lineups will look markedly different from last season’s world title, which was won by the Zags 88-78.

Jalen Suggs left Gonzaga for the NBA, while former Minnehaha Academy star teammate Chet Holmgren joined the Zags. BYU lost starters Gavin Baxter and Richard Harward to season-ending injuries, but the Cougars have continued to win. That includes victories over No. 12 Oregon, Utah and San Diego State.

“Our schedule outside of the conference, the coaches have done a great job preparing us for games like this. But still, it’s Gonzaga,” BYU junior guard Trevin Knell said, per Jeff Call of the Deseret News. “They are a great team and trained really well. It will be a challenge for us but our schedule outside of the conference has helped us both mentally and physically with our toughness to prepare for this game.”

BYU isn’t in the top 25, but the Cougars rank 30th in the net rankings on NCAA.com. Krell, who averages 7.4 points and two rebounds per game, said the Cougars are “right where we want to be in terms of our ultimate goal of going to the NCAA tournament and getting a deep run” by call.

“This team is special,” Krell said via call. “We go in whether we shoot or miss. We give 100% everything. I think that will show up on Thursday.”

Gonzaga has not lost to No. 24 Alabama, 91-82, since Dec. 4. The Zags only had two losses against ranked opponents. The 8th-place Duke also defeated the Zags 84-81 on November 26. Zags head coach Mark Few expects a similar challenge from the Cougars.

“They’re always just going crazy, crazy hard and coming at you with a variety of guys and playing with a lot of confidence,” Few said, per The Spokesman-Review’s Jim Heehan. “They get a really good game from (Fousseyni Traore) and they had a wonderful, successful non-league (Showing).”

Traore, a 6-6 freshman forward, averages 8.1 points and 7.8 points for the Cougars. BYU could face off against Gonzaga’s 7-0 center at Holmgren, who averaged 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds in his first 14 career games, at the post.

The Cougars also need to put the brakes on Zag’s 6-10 junior forward Drew Timme. He averages 16.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per match.
